Martello were elated to accept the International Award from the Museums & Heritage Association in London last week. Judges of the award included the director general of the Imperial War Museum and the director of the London Transport Museum. They chose Glasnevin Museum because it is: "an impressively sensitive and well-rounded Museum which carefully balances due reverence with theatricality and dramatic architecture." Other projects shortlisted for the award included the Museum of Islamic Art in Egypt and Exploration Space at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Mark Leslie represented Martello at a dinner on April 27th the Metropolitan Club in New York, hosted by Douglas Daft for the friends and sponsors of The Power of Words. Martello are collaborating with Allen Packwood and the curators of the Churchill Archive in Cambridge on this exhibition that will focus on Winston Churchill’s powers of oratory, and his links with the United States. The Power of Words will open in New York’s Morgan Library in June 2012. Celebrity sponsors at the event included author and businesswoman Tina Santi Flaherty.
Tuesday saw the official opening of the newly-restored Operations Room aboard HMS Belfast. Moored beside Tower Bridge in London, HMS Belfast served Britain for 32 years and is now a branch of the Imperial War Museum. Martello were delighted to complement this already impressive museum with a new fully immersive space which allows visitors to imagine a real-life naval operation.
Phil Reed, Director of HMS Belfast, says: "We’re very excited about this dynamic addition to the ship and we hope the new Operations Room will really help people understand what life was like on board. HMS Belfast is already a firm favourite with families and we’re certain the interactive Operations Room, which is at the very top of the ship, will soon be a high point of everyone’s visit."

Philippe de Montebello, the legendary former Director of Metropolitan Museum was among the cultural luminaries interviewed by Mark Leslie in New York’s MOBIA (Museum of Biblical Art) for their Gala Night video honouring Bill Baker, the former President of WNET public television. Martello’s production was filmed against the sumptuous background of MOBIA’s “Passion in Venice’ exhibition by Director Luke Leslie, and Cameraman Narayan Van Maele of Buckled Cranium, who collaborated with Martello at EXPO 2010.
A ten-strong delegation from Martello Media, and their client the Glasnevin Trust enjoyed red carpet treatment at the THEA Awards in the Globe Theatre in Universal Studios. The Glasnevin Museum was honoured with an Outstanding Achievement Award for themed design alongside: -The World of Harry Potter in Orlando, the Walt Disney Family Museum, the China Pavilion at EXPO, and similar projects. Both the Gala and the preceding Conference provided an unrivalled opportunity to forge friendships and alliances within the global attraction industry. See 2010 THEA Award recipients.
The Digital Media Awards were held last Friday night and Martello left with no less than 4 awards. The Ireland Pavilion at Expo 2010 won a gold medal for Business to Consumer Innovation. The An Post Museum won a gold medal for Digital Design. However, most excitingly, Glasnevin Cemetery Museum was awarded the overall Grand Prix, with judges calling it "an excellent design that delivers all of its objectives."

Martello were delighted to receive recognition from the Public Sector Journal. They awarded Martello outright winners for Excellence in Business in the area of Exhibitions and Design.
The Glasnevin Museum has been voted as a recipient of the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement: Museum, our industry's highest honour. The judges gave the award to the Martello designed exhibition because it "stretches the format for presenting history in innovative and compelling ways." This is the second Thea award won by Martello, the first being for Cosmos at the Castle in 2008. Other previous winners include the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and the Newseum in Washington DC. The awards, which will be held in March, are run by the Themed Entertainment Association, an international non-profit association representing the world's leading creators, developers, designers and producers of compelling places and experiences. The judges were impressed by Martello's blend of "modern database technology, impressive interactive experiences and captivating set work."

The Ireland Pavilion was awarded a BIE (International Exhibitions Bureau) Bronze Medal at the spectacular closing ceremony of the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai China last night. Ireland's medal for 'Theme Development' was conferred by Jean-Pierre Lafon the President of BIE, the World EXPO co-ordinating body. The EXPO 2010 theme was- Better Cities-Better Living.
"I am convinced that the vision of Better City, Better Life will become reality" said Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Qishan during the ceremony. The accolade follows last month's 'Model Pavilion' Award for Ireland from the Chinese authorities, and last week's IDI (Institute of Designers of Ireland) Award for Exhibition Design.
"We are thrilled that the project has now received recognition from Irish, Chinese and international bodies" said Mark Leslie of Martello Media, the Pavilion's interpretative planners and exhibition designers. "Other pavilions won medals purely for the building or the exhibits. A 'Theme Development' award proves that the building, the exhibition, and the audiovisual displays seamlessly combined to convey the EXPO message" he added. The Pavilion building was designed OPW (Office of Public Works) architect Des Byrne.

The exhibition in the Ireland Pavilion at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai won the Exhibition Design section of the IDI (Institute of Designers of Ireland) awards last night in Dublin City Hall.
It narrowly beat the exhibition in the Glasnevin Museum, which was 'Highly Commended' by the judging panel of distinguished designers from around the World. Martello Media were the exhibition designers for both projects.
This is the third successive year that Martello have won the Exhibition section outright. Previous IDI Awards for Martello include Fellowship of Freedom in the National Museum (Winner 1998); Tintern Abbey ( Commendation 2002 ); The Stowe Visitor Pavilion (Winner 2003) ; Strangers to Citizens (Commendation 2008) The Cliffs of Moher (Winner 2008); Cosmos at the Castle (Winner Best Animation 2008); Guinness Storehouse (Winner 2009).
The IDI Awards follows hard on the heels of September's announcement that the Ireland Pavilion was judged by the Chinese among the four best pavilions EXPO (see below).
On 15 September, the Expo Bureau Shanghai designated the Ireland pavilion at Expo 2010 to be a 'Model Pavilion'. This recognition was given also to 3 other foreign national pavilions - Qatar, Singapore & Norway (selected from among c.200 national participants and 50 international oranisations). Selection was based on the totality of participation - pavilion design, exhibit content, visitor handling and cultural programme.
Minister Eamon Ryan officially opened the An Post Museum, situated in the GPO on Dublin's O'Connell street. The museum houses the Letters, Lives and Liberty exhibition designed and built by Martello Media. The opening was covered in the Irish Times and the Independent. Read more about the museum here.
The Ireland Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 was recently visited by Mary Robinson. Martello designed the exhibition within the Pavilion, which since opening last month has seen upwards of 15,000 visitors daily. Read the Irish Times review here.

Wednesday saw the opening of the new exhibition in the National Library of Ireland - 'Discover Your National Library'. The exhibition, designed and developed by Martello Media, is situated in 2/3 Kildare Street, and allows visitors to explore the Library's rich collections through various interactive mediums. Mark Leslie spoke at this evening's TEDx event in the Science Gallery, on Shared Values for a Global Culture. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Watch Mark's talk here.
Guinness Storehouse and Martello Media were winners in the Exhibition Design category at this year's IDEA awards. 2009 is the fifteenth year that the Irish Design Effectiveness Awards have been held, to reward and celebrate the client design relationship and deliver the clear message that good design is about client needs and not just aesthetics. The new Entry and Exit Experience at the Guinness Storehouse directly led to a 10% increase in visitor numbers, following the philosophy of Design Business Ireland, that effectiveness is the most important factor to the client and therefore the essential ingredient of good design.
Martello are delighted to have produced the winning design for the exhibition that will be in the Ireland Pavilion at next years World Expo in China. The Ireland Pavilion at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai has been designed to show the relationship between urban and rural, manmade and natural, by setting the creativity of the Irish, their ancient history, vibrant modern culture, crafts, and manufacturers, into the context of a small but surprisingly varied and beautiful island.
New Entry and Exit Experience at the Guinness Storehouse was the winner of the Exhibition Design category at the IDI Design Awards. Designed by Martello Media, these additional elements have boosted visitor numbers to Ireland's most popular visitor attraction.
Martello are partners of this year's Museums Association Conference. The annual conference is the biggest museum and gallery event in Europe, with over 1,400 museum professionals discussing the key issues affecting the sector today. Having completed the interpretative master plan, Martello are now working on the detailed exhibition design for the new visitor centre at Glasnevin Cemetery. Glasnevin is Ireland's largest cemetery, and is uniquely positioned to make a direct connection with every major historical and cultural event that has occurred in Irish modern history.
Martello assisted in launching a Wind Energy initiative, which aims to revive the Irish economy. Martello created an informative video including 3D visualisations, to help explain the concept to the Irish people. The project is directed by Spirit of Ireland, a voluntary group of experts who are working to make Ireland energy independent within 5 years.
The Life and Works of WB Yeats at the National Library has been nominated for the EMYA prize. The European Museum of the Year Award is awarded by the European Museum Forum to a small number of museums which are judged to deserve special commendation. A list of previous winners can be seen here.
The 2009 Digital Media Awards took place on Friday Feb 13th at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Santry. Martello Media were delighted to be nominated for their innovative work on the Guinness Storehouse Entrance and Exit area.
Fighting Words is a creative writing centre based in Russell Street, Dublin 1, established by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love. The centre helps students of all ages to develop their writing skills and to explore their love of writing. Martello Media installed multimedia equipment and provides ongoing technical assistance to this charity project.
The Irish Design Effectiveness Awards (IDEA) were held on Friday as part of Design Week 2008. IDEA provides a platform from which design solutions are measured for their economic effectiveness and perceptible influence, rather than solely on aesthetic value. Martello were delighted to be awarded winner in the New Media / Multimedia category for Cosmos at the Castle.
Wednesday sees the launch of the new developments at the Guinness Storehouse, Ireland's No. 1 visitor attraction. Martello designed unique multimedia and immersive spaces for the new entrance, exit and atrium areas. Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Mr Martin Cullen will officiate the launch.
Martello celebrated at the Mansion house with three victories at the 10th Annual Institute of Designers in Ireland Awards. The Awards is an occasion to celebrate the excellent standard of design achieved by designers on the island of Ireland for 2007/2008.
Atlantic Edge at the Cliffs of Moher was awarded best Exhibition Design, Cosmos at the Castle won best Digital Animation, and Strangers to Citizens was commended for Exhibition Design.
A party from Martello will attend a gala evening in the Disney Hotel in Anaheim, Los Angeles where ‘Cosmos at the Castle’, in Cork, will be presented with a THEA Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Themed Attraction Design’ from TEA, the world body for themed attraction designers.
Martello is the first Irish design company to ever design a THEA winning project - the fun-park industry’s equivalent of an Oscar.
Martello’s WB Yeats Exhibition in the National Library came runner up in the Grand Prix and was also a category winner at the Digital Media Awards.
The Cosmos at the Castle exhibition was also a finalist, in the categories ‘Best Animation’ and ‘Best Educational Project’.
The Taoiseach Bertie Aherne and the Foreign Minister Dermot Aherne jointly opened the Irish Aid Centre in Dublin’s O’Connell St. Martello collaborated with award winning architect Tom de Paor to create this strikingly modern centre to raise awareness of Irish efforts to assist the developing World.
During 2007 Martello was strengthened by a number of talented new designers. Maryann Jardine has joined Martello’s New Media Design team. Architect Caroline Kiernan is working with Mark Leslie on spatial design. Joanne Byrne has already made an outstanding contribution with the graphic design at ‘Cosmos’ and ‘Strangers to Citizens’.
Martello have been short-listed for no less than four Digital Media Awards for 2007 to be presented by Minister for Trade and Enterprise Michael Martin at a gala dinner on February 7th 2008.
Cosmos at the Castle has been nominated for ‘Best Animation’ and as ‘Best Educational Project’. It goes head to head in this category against Martello’s WB Yeats Exhibition in the National Library which has also been nominated for as ‘Best Business to Consumer’ project.
Arts and Culture Minister Seamus Brennan opened the Martello’s ‘Strangers to Citizens – The Irish in Europe’ exhibition in the National Library’s Heraldic Museum. The exhibition is timed to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the flight of the Wild Geese to Europe.
The AHI (British Association for Heritage Interpretation) held its annual ‘Interpret Britain and Ireland Awards’ at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre on Monday 26th November 2007.
This was the first time in its 21-year history that the AHI have held this event outside of Great Britain. This was in recognition that two of the three winners were Irish projects, and that Martello Media had submitted an AHI award-winning project for an unprecedented fifth year in a row.
