GLASNEVIN, DUBLIN, IRELAND

Daniel O’Connell founded Glasnevin Cemetery Museum as Ireland’s first multicultural institution ‘for people of all faiths and none. ‘ One million people are buried in Ireland’s national necropolis. They include many major historical, political, military, and artistic figures from both sides of Ireland’s religious and cultural divide. The Museum has a popular café and shop. It is the starting point for a range of popular guided site tours.

An immersive exhibition on three levels charts the social, historical, political and artistic development of modern Ireland through seven generations. It explores the burial customs and afterlife beliefs of over 30 faiths buried there. Glasnevin consistently retains Dublin’s number one spot on Trip Advisor.

“a most unusual, daring and, sometimes, controversial achievement that challenges common perceptions of the role of museums in society.” European Museum of the Year Judging Panel
