Remarkable Irish lace-making traditions hang by a thread

Minister Heather Humphries opened ‘Linked by A Thread’ in the Canal Stores building in Clones, Co. Monaghan.

The event was attended by some of the extraordinary women who have maintained the astonishing dexterity to make the intricate Irish crochet lace. The tradition was started in the 1840s by Cassandra Hand to provide employment during the Irish Famine. Clones lace retains its global prestige for items such as royal wedding dresses.
